Privacy Policy

Last updated: 17 March 2026

Who we are

Markly is an AI-assisted worksheet marking tool for UK primary school teachers. This policy explains how we handle your data when you use our service.

What we collect

We collect the minimum data needed to provide the service:

  • Account information: your email address, and optionally your full name and school name.
  • Student data: first names and last initials only. We do not collect surnames, dates of birth, or any other student identifiers.
  • Uploaded work: photographs or scans of student worksheets are processed by AI and then permanently deleted. We do not store worksheet images after processing.
  • Assessment data: AI-generated and teacher-edited feedback, scores, and reports.

How we use your data

  • To transcribe handwritten student work and generate assessment feedback.
  • To track student progress across assignments and generate summative reports.
  • To authenticate your account and maintain your session.
  • To improve the service (aggregated, anonymised usage patterns only).

AI processing

Student worksheets are sent to a third-party AI service for transcription and assessment. This processing is done on a per-request basis. Your data is not used to train AI models.

Data storage and security

Your data is stored securely using industry-standard encryption. Our database infrastructure is hosted within the EU/UK region. All data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS).

Cookies

We use essential cookies only for authentication and session management. We do not use tracking cookies, analytics cookies, or advertising cookies.

Third-party services

We use third-party services for database hosting, authentication, AI processing, and application hosting. Each provider processes data in accordance with their own privacy policies and data processing agreements.

Data retention and deletion

Your data is retained for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from the Settings page. Upon deletion, all your data — including classes, students, assignments, submissions, and reports — is permanently removed.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Request deletion of your data.
  • Object to or restrict processing of your data.
  • Data portability.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@usemarkly.com.

Children's data

Markly is designed for use by teachers, not students. We store only first names and last initials of students — no full names, dates of birth, or other identifiable information. Teachers are responsible for ensuring they have appropriate consent or legal basis to process student work through the service.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email or a notice within the application.
